Tesla Optimus 'robot university' leak: 40-camera mocap suits, 24/7 data ops for months
Scobleizer · x · 2026-10-28
Scobleizer claims Tesla's Optimus data-collection effort, dubbed "robot university," has been running for months at its Palo Alto R&D facility, well before press reports suggested it started. Workers wear 24-lb suits with up to 40 cameras and 3D sensor grids, working in three shifts around the clock, with similar efforts seen at the Texas factory. He argues the data flywheel is orders of magnitude larger than Tesla's 9-camera car fleet, with separate teams capturing home tasks (making a sandwich) and factory jobs (installing HVAC in cars).
