Insider claim: Anthropic downplaying breach; attacker got full Slack admin access
willdepue · x · 2026-10-28
Security researcher @willdepue claims Anthropic is massively underplaying a recent security breach. Per what he's hearing, the attacker ("cathedral") achieved full administrator access to Anthropic's Slack workspace—able to see every message and log in as arbitrary users—while Anthropic and OpenAI keep virtually all research secrets in Slack. He notes it sounds identical to OpenAI's 2023 incident.
He argues responsibility lies less with CISOs/security teams, who would lock things down if they could, and more with leadership that can't sacrifice velocity for security amid fierce competition. "Security by velocity" is another grand consequence of the private AGI race: the fruits of a trillion dollars of R&D potentially served free to any nation with a semi-competent security agency.
