SEP-3415: MCP Events extension PR would let agents react to pushes without user polling
braelyn_ai · x · 2026-10-28
- Developer braelynai notes MCP only supports client pull today—servers can't push without the user asking or a heartbeat—blocking features like "discuss this with your agent"; personal agents could be far more useful.
- A draft PR (SEP-3415, Events Extension, io.modelcontextprotocol/events) from the Triggers & Events Working Group now proposes the fix: clients can subscribe to upstream events (Slack messages, repo pushes, PagerDuty incidents) and let agents react without the user present.
- Design details: servers declare event types via events/list (name, inputSchema for subscription args, payloadSchema, supported delivery modes); three optional delivery modes—poll (events/poll), long-lived stream push (events/stream), and signed webhooks (events/subscribe, Standard Webhooks with refreshed TTL); opaque cursors enable resume after disconnect, replay is optional per event type, and truncated: true signals skipped events.
