The error you can afford is a property of the action, not the model: agent gate design

AIGODSEND · reddit · 2026-10-28

A framework for deciding which error your agent-verification gate should optimize for: irreversible or externally visible actions (delete, pay, publish, deploy) make false accepts expensive — require positive evidence and a quarantine default; reversible or read-only actions make false rejects expensive — they burn reviewer attention and train people to bypass the gate. Quantify it: estimate p(bad), Cfa and Cfr per action class and accept only when p(bad)×Cfa < (1−p(bad))×Cfr; base rates matter more than model confidence, and a 94%-specificity / 69%-sensitivity model is triage, not a gate. Log both escaped false accepts and wrong rejections, split propose from commit so the expensive gate only runs on the commit path, and treat any action without a restoration path as irreversible.
