Open-source ai-phone: local LLM answers real calls on your Mac, nothing leaves the machine
Agent007_MI9 · reddit · 2026-10-28
A Reddit user open-sourced ai-phone: a fully local AI phone agent running on a Mac (Apple Silicon, MLX), built to avoid handing call audio, transcripts and content to third-party AI phone products.
Local stack:
- STT: Parakeet TDT 0.6B
- LLM: Qwen3.5 4B by default (9B with 32 GB), 4-bit
- TTS: Kokoro 82M
Phone network access: registers over SIP with Telnyx or Twilio ($1/month per number). It answers and places real calls, stops mid-sentence when interrupted, replies in 1–1.5s on an M5 Pro, and exposes a CLI (call/listen/say/hangup) so other agents like Claude Code or Codex can make calls. You can optionally point it at a Claude/ChatGPT subscription endpoint for a smarter brain; local is the default.
Limits: macOS Apple Silicon only, English only, one call at a time, needs a Telnyx/Twilio account. Repo: github.com/oxwn/ai-phone
