California Senator Adam Schiff urged Meta to abandon its new commercial terms (effective Nov 20) allowing broad scraping of news sites, calling the choice forced on publishers — surrender off-platform IP or forfeit a primary channel — "a gross abuse of Meta's power." He demanded explicit guarantees that paywalls and robots.txt be respected, arguing Meta's verbal assurances aren't legally enforceable. Meta had already delayed the rollout amid legal skepticism.
