kanzo: a self-hostable kanban MCP server for coding agents at 10-60 tokens per reply
allmudi · reddit · 2026-10-27
A developer released kanzo, a tiny self-hostable kanban board that doubles as an MCP server, so Claude Code and Codex can pick tasks from the same board you use. Free and open source (AGPL).
Design
- One Rust binary with embedded SQLite, 5k lines; no Docker, no database server, no accounts, no cloud
- One-line install; agents connect via kanzo mcp; the board is one local folder, syncable across machines via a private git repo
Token efficiency (measured with Anthropic's counttokens endpoint, not estimated)
- System prompt overhead is cached after the first call; agent replies are 10-60 tokens of plain text
- Tasks return one per line instead of JSON, and a single nexttask call picks the top card, moves it to doing, and returns it — avoiding list→choose→update chains
Memory: RSS settles around 6 MB; actual process footprint 3 MB
A great reference for anyone building MCP tools: optimize for agent token spend and call counts.
