Dev pushes back on Hinton's AI warnings: his work predates the Transformer era
gerardsans · x · 2026-10-27
Responding to a viral thread about Geoffrey Hinton having spent 50 years building the technology he now warns could wipe us out, @gerardsans argues Hinton's core work was on neural networks, not Transformers — making much of his AI-risk commentary feel outdated in today's Transformer-dominated landscape. The original post noted that when asked on The Diary of a CEO (2025) what he would do differently, Hinton said he wished he'd spent more time with his wife, not something about AI; two of his wives died of cancer, and his lineage traces back to George Boole, inventor of Boolean algebra.
