Microsoft has made about 60,000 employees across the US, Canada, India and the UK — 27% of its 223,000-person workforce — eligible for voluntary buyouts.
Eligible employees are offered a cash severance package to quit voluntarily: each can take the money and leave on December 31, or decline and keep their job. Nobody is forced out and no acquisition is involved.
