Nonprofit GiveDirectly is piloting an optional AI chatbot alongside its cash transfer program in Rwanda. The announcement drew questions: what is a chatbot doing in a cash program, what if it gives bad advice, and why not just give people more money?
Nathan Young, a longtime observer of the org, notes GiveDirectly has a strong track record of honesty about its flaws, and expects it to genuinely care for recipients and report honestly if the pilot doesn't work.
