Nikkei reports Sakana AI is leading Japan's domestic LLM development effort, aimed at defense and cybersecurity applications to reduce reliance on US and Chinese models.
Project lead iwiwi presented the development plan (working name Sakana Sawara) at a symposium, arguing that methods and costs for building genuinely usable models have become clear enough that starting an LLM project now is cost-effective, and discussing how such development ties into "RSI" (recursive self-improvement).
