Dutch MEP Bart Groothuis (VVD) argues in AD that well-intended EU rules are holding back European AI while China and the US race ahead. He has tabled 21 amendments to the AI Act to make training AI models legally feasible, framing the choice as build the technology yourself or be colonized by tech you cannot regulate.
Fellow MEP Kim van Sparrentak counters that AI should not develop unregulated and Europe shouldn't trade away environmental and data-rights protections just to stay in the game. The piece also cites Mistral, Aleph Alpha, and debates over data-center expansion, like the gigawatt center in Saline, Michigan.
