McKinsey: $530B AI value pool in finance comes from replacing high-wage workers

Citing Rich Turrin's analysis: McKinsey says financial services holds the largest AI value pool of any industry — $530 billion — mostly labor cost, with the biggest returns coming from replacing high-skilled, high-wage workers rather than back office or call center staff.
- Banks will spend $53B on AI this year, yet almost none can prove it's paying off.
- Barclays announced 5,000 AI-related job cuts; Citi, HSBC and Standard Chartered are also cutting — layoffs started before any ROI was proven.
- The piece questions when "we'll figure out ROI later" became acceptable justification for eliminating thousands of jobs.
- Also noted: just 1% of companies account for 80% of AI spending, and AI agents can move money but can't establish liability.
