Reading code to find hidden snakes: Bau reviews contestants' static analysis tricks
davidbau · x · 2026-10-26
David Bau reviews the static code analysis techniques used by top contestants in the Teleport NetHack challenge. Using richie3366 — the highest-scoring hand port on the new held-out sessions — as an example, he shows how hidden-monster logic (eels lurking underwater, snakes hiding under piles) is exactly the kind of blind spot tests miss but code reading catches. He surveys the strongest teams' techniques and their respective blind spots as a guide for the final month of phase 1.
