Why ultrasound is the goldilocks zone for brain-computer interfaces
burny_tech · x · 2026-10-26
Researcher @guillefix shared brain-interface startup Nudge's mission post and laid out the physics case for focused ultrasound as the BCI route:
- Physics offers only three ways to interface with the brain: waves (EM/acoustic), mechanical (implants/surgery), and chemical (drugs).
- Chemical methods lack spatial specificity; mechanical implants are risky especially deep in the brain; EM waves scatter too much, focus poorly, or pose radiation risks.
- Ultrasound sits in a goldilocks zone: propagates deep into tissue, millimeter wavelengths enable millimeter-level focusing, and its safety profile is well understood.
The author frames the work as a path toward "cognitive liberty."
