Open-source model does live single-camera 3D scene reconstruction at ~20 FPS, wows SLAM veteran
facontidavide · x · 2026-10-25
A robotics engineer with 15 years of SLAM experience reflects on how far the field has come: back then, single-camera SLAM wasn't taken seriously and good accuracy required LiDAR. Now an open-source model rebuilds 3D scenes from one camera live at 20 FPS while staying stable over long sequences. He also notes position estimation has advanced hugely via factor graphs, IMU preintegration and more — and the once-impossible setup is now code you can clone and run.
