pgrust's rigorous testing has already surfaced multiple real Postgres bugs

Dan Luu endorses Michael Malis's pgrust project (rewriting Postgres in Rust) with the argument that "we should be more ambitious with the software we build."
- Rewrite projects like pgrust are routinely dismissed as AI-generated vibeslop, but Malis's testing is deep enough to have uncovered genuine Postgres bugs: a numerical bug breaking valid SP-GiST operations, a format cache bug causing wrong JSONPath results, a pgcrypto bug, multiple memory safety issues in the dictionary loader, a money overflow, and more.
- Even if pgrust itself never ships, the effort has durably improved Postgres, and the performance optimizations demonstrated could flow into Postgres or ClickHouse.
- Luu acknowledges the skepticism is rational: most AI rewrite projects are indeed slop, and nobody has time to vet them all.
