UofT and Google paper calls for a common evaluation standard for GEO benchmarks

An arXiv paper, "Humanity's Last Choice: A Common Evaluation Standard for Generative Engine Optimization" (University of Toronto & Google, 19 pages):
- Core argument: choosing which AI assistant to trust with subsequent decisions may be the last big choice people make; content providers now edit pages via generative engine optimization (GEO) to get cited or recommended, so choosing an assistant requires comparable evidence of behavior under GEO.
- Problem: existing GEO benchmarks define their own strategy spaces and editing constraints, conflating gains from better optimization algorithms with those from greater freedom to edit sources, and making coverage incomparable across benchmarks.
- Proposal: a common evaluation standard built on a meta-taxonomy describing where sources are edited, how, and which signals edits target; a searchable mapping of existing strategies and a protocol for controlled comparisons with explicit coverage reporting, laying groundwork for shared leaderboards.
