Google paper: proactive AI agent 'teammates' collide with the human ecosystem of work

A 16-author Google/DeepMind paper (arXiv:2609.29901) presents an in-situ qualitative study of a persistent, proactive AI agent 'teammate' deployed across teams at a large tech company. Findings show human-agent workplace boundaries are actively in flux, with breakdowns and negotiations around: tacit rules of collaborative workflows, the relational boundaries of this non-human actor, and redistribution of trust and human agency. The authors use these early micro-negotiations to chart a research, design, and organizational agenda that preserves human agency in workplaces shared with non-human organizational actors.
