Gemini helps user diagnose a dead CPU core and save a laptop from being scrapped
NatrIIcore · reddit · 2026-10-25
A Reddit user's laptop kept BSODing with IRQL errors. Gemini first blamed the RAM, but testing ruled out RAM, SSD, and other replaceable parts.
After extensive back-and-forth, booting with just 1 physical core worked; enabling 2 cores at a time pinpointed a dead 2nd physical core. Console-level core isolation failed because the dead core still got hit within microseconds, so Gemini suggested a cleverer route: a leaked low-level AMD engineering tool booted from USB to hard-disable the faulty core at the hardware level. The laptop now runs stably on 7/8 physical cores and 14/16 threads.
