How much does Chinese AI progress depend on US frontier labs? The overlooked role of failed experiments
jessi_cata · x · 2026-10-25
A forecasting question worth weighing: to what extent is non-US (especially Chinese) AI progress dependent on US frontier labs, e.g. through distillation? If US labs stopped advancing, how much would China's rate of progress slow, assuming no policy change?
The author adds that the dependency goes beyond distillation — it includes information about which training setups worked and research papers. Much of frontier labs' spending goes to "failed products," and the lessons from those failures are themselves leakable knowledge.
