UK per-capita electricity now below 1970s levels, just as AI demands power
NinaDSchick · x · 2026-10-25
Citing an Our World in Data chart: UK per-capita electricity generation peaked at 6,700 kWh in 2003 and has fallen to 4,200 kWh in 2025 — below the 4,300 kWh of 1968 and lower than the 'rolling-blackout, three-day week' era of the 1970s. Nina Schick argues the timing is disastrous: in an epoch where electricity is being converted into tokens for superintelligence, the home of Alan Turing and DeepMind will have none, and cannot compete or innovate in that world. 'Tragic.'
