Kimi K3 needs 25x more compute per query than DeepSeek V4.1, margin analysis shows

A detailed cost breakdown by teortaxesTex compares the serving economics of Moonshot's Kimi K3 against DeepSeek V4.1.
Key numbers:
- Serving the same traffic mix, K3 needs 21-34x the GPU-time of DeepSeek (roughly 535-970 racks for 155T tokens/day), with prefill dominated by 24 dense MLA layers attending over the full prefix in BF16.
- Moonshot's per-turn pricing is 20-30x DeepSeek's, roughly matching the compute gap. At list prices it earns about as much per GPU as DeepSeek (79-91% margins), and even subscription pricing (half price) leaves a healthy 75% margin.
- Cache hits account for 42-77% of Kimi's revenue per turn; cache writes are priced the same as input.
- The real problem is price competition: the same capital buys 25x fewer turns on K3. If DeepSeek launches V4.1 Pro at cost-based pricing ($0.38-0.50/M input, $1.5-2.0/M output vs Kimi's $1.94/$10.15), K3 would face -46% to +31% margins at matching per-turn prices — cheap DeepSeek models destroy the case for hosting K3.
The author is also pessimistic on K3.1 Pro's generalization: despite being the strongest Chinese model, it merely matches V4.1F on several benchmarks despite higher cost.
