Nvidia pays multibillion-dollar advances to lock in substrate capacity through 2028, 2.5x in three years
tengyanAI · x · 2026-10-24
Nvidia is pre-paying substrate makers for capacity that mostly lands in 2028. Substrate — the base layer every AI chip package sits on — was flagged as the next supply chain bottleneck. Per Nvidia's Oct 21 release:
- Ibiden: a "multibillion-dollar capacity reservation advance" to triple its ono plant, ramping from Q1 2028
- Unimicron: capacity from Q2 2027, full by mid-2028
- Samsung Electro-Mechanics: ₩6.78T with "customer funding support", mass production in 2028
That's 2.5x substrate capacity over three years, meaning chips shipping in 2027 must mostly fit through lines already running or under construction today. Same pattern as memory and neoclouds: the buyer funds the factory to get in line.
