Claude Desktop blocks local models; users bypass it with a loopback proxy trick
pneuny · reddit · 2026-10-24
A Reddit post shows Claude Desktop refusing attempts to add local models (see screenshots). Commenters share a workaround: run a loopback proxy that rewrites the local model's ID to include "claude" while avoiding other known model names, then set a display name so you know which model you're actually using.
The post serves both as evidence of Claude Desktop's local-model lockout and a reproducible bypass technique.
