OpenAI ships Automations in Agents API for scheduled agent tasks
OpenAIDevs · x · 2026-10-24
OpenAI's developer account announced a major addition to the Agents API this week: Automations.
- Developers can now have an agent run on a schedule, e.g. scanning for the best flight price every day
- Agents can also wake up a thread hourly to check on task progress
- The official sample uses client.beta.agents.sessions.create() with an automations tool on gpt-6.1-sol in an OpenAI-hosted environment, driven by a natural-language instruction like "once an hour, find the lowest SFO→HND fare"
