Replit acquires Chroma to build the context layer for AI agents
amasad · x · 2026-10-24
Replit is acquiring vector database company Chroma. Together they plan to build the "context layer for the self-driving company" — letting agents tap everything an organization knows.
Chroma started in 2022 on training data curation, then pivoted to inference-time context after ChatGPT. ChromaDB at one point held an estimated 95% of vector search downloads, powering customers like SpaceXAI, Mintlify, Krea, Retool, and CoreWeave. The team also published influential reports on Context Rot and Context-1, plus deep dives on Fission transactions and an S3-native WAL. In mid-2026 it began Foundation, an enterprise context solution, which will now continue inside Replit.
