Snipaya MCP: Let Your Agent Annotate and Redact Mac Screenshots with 28 Tools
ydrus · reddit · 2026-10-23
The author released a local MCP server for Snipaya, a Mac screenshot annotator, letting agents like Claude Code drive 28 tools: placing screenshots on a canvas, drawing arrows and numbered callouts, auto-blurring secrets found in images, extracting text, and exporting or sending results, plus 6 prompts like 'explain a bug in this screenshot'.
Architecture and gotchas:
- The server runs in-app, bound to 127.0.0.1 only, token-protected, off by default
- An MIT-licensed open source stdio bridge serves stdio-only clients and reads the token from the app automatically
- One-line Claude Code setup: claude mcp add --scope user snipaya -e npmconfigregistry=https://registry.npmjs.org/ -- npx -y snipaya-mcp
Lessons: agents need explicit server instructions to keep related screenshots on one canvas (otherwise they open a tab per image), and a project .npmrc pointing at a private registry silently breaks npx — hence the registry flag. The app is paid with a 14-day trial; the bridge is MIT.
