Open 14B Carbon-X reads raw DNA at 67% benchmark score, ~1000x cheaper than GPT-6.1 Sol
Thom_Wolf · x · 2026-10-23
Thom Wolf announced Carbon-X, an open 14B model trained with TIGEM, University of Naples Federico II, and Zhongguancun Academy that reads raw DNA and explains it in plain English. It scores 67% on their DNA benchmarks vs 61% for Claude Opus 5.5 and 50% for Gemini 4 Argon, within a point of GPT-6.1 Sol at 1000x lower cost. Human and animal virus sequences were excluded from training; weights are open and run on a laptop. Wolf also notes his own AI assistant got blocked by bio-safety filters while summarizing the team's release notes—a friction scientists face daily.
