A developer built a fully client-side LLM cost calculator comparing Claude 3.7, GPT-4o, DeepSeek R1/V3 and Gemini Flash. Key findings: the "1 token ≈ 4 characters" heuristic breaks badly on code indentation and non-Latin scripts (Arabic UTF-8 is 1.8 chars/token), wrecking multilingual RAG cost estimates; and identical volume of 15k calls/month costs under $40 on DeepSeek R1 or Gemini Flash versus $170–$250 on Sonnet 3.7 or GPT-4o.
