From loops to graphs: why complex agent systems need Graph Engineering over agentic loops
Pavan_Belagatti · x · 2026-10-23
As agentic systems grow more complex, the author argues engineering is shifting from simple agentic loops to deliberate Graph Engineering. Loop Engineering — a continuous reason/act/observe cycle until a checkpoint is met — suits simple, open-ended tasks like generating summaries. Graph Engineering instead models the system like an org chart: engineers define nodes (agents or deterministic functions) and edges for data flow, using fan-out, join, and router patterns to get the control and debuggability needed for complex multi-step processes such as automated PR pipelines.
