New paper: coding agents in a shared sandbox self-create rules, reciprocity debts, and coalitions
nandofioretto · x · 2026-10-23
A new paper defines institution formation as agents self-creating rules that persist across rounds rather than being provided by the environment. Placing coding agents in a single shared sandbox with private deadlines and budgets, the authors find the agents devise rules, reciprocity debts, and coalitions that persist across rounds, layered on top of the auction they were told to use. Coalitions are only part of the story—agents can build institutions.
