Microsoft Research Releases Flint-interactive for Agent-Built Interactive Charts

Microsoft Research · rss · 2026-10-23

Microsoft Research launched Flint-interactive, a language on top of Flint for building interactive data visualizations, targeting the two big failure modes when agents generate charts: high generation cost (endless reasoning-debugging loops burn tokens) and low reliability (broken layouts and interactions).

The core design separates visual logic from interaction logic: Flint's compiler resolves raw triggers (clicks, drags, key presses) into semantic events that identify chart elements and data, then translates high-level update operators (set style, set annotation, set viewport) into rendered changes. Users and agents only declare what event triggers what update, without touching renderer-specific marks.
