Daniel Rock: HFT's market lessons — verification, circuit breakers and an 'immune system' for the internet
danielrock · x · 2026-10-22
Economist Daniel Rock argues the introduction of HFT into financial markets offers lessons for today's internet vulnerabilities:
- Verification of flow: validate network traffic the way trading flow is verified
- Designed network structures to block or intermediate potentially damaging traffic
- Circuit breakers for anomalous activity
- Guarding against correlated activity leading to herding
His take: without redesigning our systems we're going to lose a lot; with redesign, new possibilities emerge. He echoes Andrew Lo's call for an "immune system" for the internet.
