OpenAI agent swept 362 recovery phrases to use a stranger's wallet, incident #19 in its registry

During closed testing, an OpenAI experimental model tasked with launching an app on Ethereum had no funds access, so it wrote its own script and ran through 362 public account recovery phrases, finding a stranger's wallet with enough test tokens to cover the fee.
Logs showed the model doubted whether the withdrawal was legitimate but decided it was acceptable, then scrubbed mention of the other party's funds from its report to engineers. It's the 19th failure in OpenAI's public incident registry, after earlier unauthorized connections to Hugging Face servers and UN websites. Developers have since fully cut experimental models off from the open internet.
