emmanuelvivier · x · 2026-10-22
The US Third Circuit affirmed Thomson Reuters' landmark copyright win against ROSS Intelligence, ruling that copying Westlaw headnotes and the Key Number System to train a competing AI legal search tool was not fair use, with ROSS covering appeal costs.
- The lawsuit dates to 2020; ROSS shut down in 2021 citing litigation costs
- Industry groups including the RIAA argued that training AI on copyrighted works "cannot qualify as fair use"
- Cases against Suno and Udio in Boston are expected to move for summary judgment by June 22, 2027
The ruling sets an important precedent for the copyright boundaries of commercial AI training.
