Diffy: a cross-platform desktop app with custom semantic diff to fix unreadable line diffs
seatedro · x · 2026-10-22
Developer seatedro argues line diffs "suck": optimal tree edit distance with moves is NP-hard, but day-to-day code review can still do better than Myers' diff algorithm.
He shipped Diffy, a cross-platform desktop app that is fast, polished, and built on a custom semantic diff algorithm. Side-by-side screenshots of the same Odin changeset show the contrast: a GitHub-style Git diff renders a wall of red/green lines, while Diffy's semantic view tracks moved code, renames, and per-function edit counts (e.g. "19 edits", "moved down to line 302"). He also blames GitHub's clunky review UX for people stopping code reviews altogether.
