Tracing AI agents with OpenTelemetry: costs, P95 latency, and gaps in one pipeline
silksong_when · reddit · 2026-10-22
A SigNoz engineer tested OpenTelemetry with AI agents, writing a deep-dive blog and demo app: an NBA agent built on the OpenAI Agents SDK with guardrails, session persistence, and a tool function, instrumented with the latest OTel libraries. Traces and metrics (total cost, P95 latency) land in any OTel-compatible backend; switching vendors is just an env var change. Caveat: conventions are still evolving — guardrails aren't observable yet. Strength: one platform for agent workflows plus infra logs and metrics.
