Micron roadmap: DRAM near atomic limits goes 3D, NAND keeps stacking in xyz
BenBajarin · x · 2026-10-21
Ben Bajarin shared a Micron ($MU) technology-day slide on memory roadmaps. DRAM cells are nearing atomic limits, forcing a move to 3D DRAM stacking. NAND scaled flatly until 3D NAND launched in 2015, then moved from z-scaling to xyz-scaling—same footprint with more bits per layer and shrinking cells across growing layer counts. Micron says planar can still scale for now but will adopt 3D memory when cost and performance make sense for the market.
