Preprint: hundreds of papers contain impossible western blots, echoed by LLMs
RexDouglass · x · 2026-10-21
A new preprint and accompanying blog post reveal that hundreds of published papers contain impossible western blots showing protein expression in cell lines whose genes are deleted or mutated. These clumsy mistakes are widespread and repeated across the literature—and the study shows LLMs copy and propagate the same erroneous patterns, highlighting data-reliability risks in AI-assisted science.
