Lemire: AI is an apocalypse that reveals what was always signalling
lemire · x · 2026-10-21
Computer scientist Daniel Lemire argues AI acts as an apocalypse in the original sense — a revealing. Mathematicians dismiss problems they once pitched as funding goals once AI solves them; France's literary elite was collectively fooled by an AI-written novel despite rejecting AI authorship; decades of copyright orthodoxy («no progress without copyright») now coexist with machines producing groundbreaking public-domain content; and innovation institutions can't adapt. His takeaway: AI forces us to distinguish real progress from mere signalling, and people's reactions tell us a lot.
