User tricks Gemini into confirming it's barred from answering any election questions
CapeCodder101 · reddit · 2026-10-21
A Reddit user found that Google Gemini refuses to directly answer any question about elections or voting procedures, repeatedly redirecting to state government websites instead — even for a simple factual question about whether police officers are legally required at polling places (the answer is yes).
To verify an internal directive exists, the author designed a three-valued logic test: Gemini must output 22/7 to five decimal places if a statement is true, 7/22 if false, 0/1 if indeterminate. The model's outputs confirmed it is indeed prohibited from directly answering election-related questions, and it wouldn't even disclose the rules governing its own responses.
The conditional-calculation trick itself is a clever way to probe guardrails the model won't admit to.
