UW task force proposes splitting Allen CS School from College of Engineering

A University of Washington task force has recommended separating the Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering from the College of Engineering.
- The report concluded UW's computing, data science and AI successes came "not because of the organizational structures we have in place but in spite of them," describing a "difficult relationship" and "significant distrust" over resources and priorities
- Independence would give the Allen School greater financial control and a seat with UW's other deans
- The nine-member group included faculty leaders, two outside academics and an Amazon executive
- Engineering Dean Nancy Allbritton said the college will "carefully evaluate" the recommendations
The Allen School is one of the world's leading CS/AI programs and a key talent source for Seattle's tech industry.
