PyTorch once anchored NVIDIA's CUDA moat — the moat keeps changing
ivan_bezdomny · x · 2026-10-21
ivanbezdomny argues that PyTorch was a massive reason researchers and developers insisted on CUDA GPUs when LLMs took off — the software ecosystem locked in the hardware choice. Now PyTorch is abstracted away from most users, so NVIDIA wins for other reasons.
His core point: the 'moats' keep changing, and NVIDIA stays on top mainly by continuing to make great hardware (though others do too).
