Holon-S1 predicts genes and biomarkers from routine pathology slides across 16 organ types
iScienceLuvr · x · 2026-10-21
A new platform called Holon-S1 predicts spatial gene expression and biomarkers directly from routine pathology slides, replacing slow and expensive molecular testing.
Key points:
- Beat two other models in a controlled comparison of spatial gene-activity prediction
- Has surfaced potentially novel biomarkers in breast and colon cancer
- Evaluated across 16 organ types and 15+ scanners, on both FFPE and fresh-frozen tissue
- Uses openly shared multi-omics data from Sid Sijbrandij's osteosarcoma samples (SidBench/Osteosarc), including WGS, WES, and scRNA-seq across timepoints
The team believes it can help researchers discover new biomarkers and treatments from slides they already have — a notable AI-for-Science application in oncology.
