Randomized pilot: ultrasound stimulation of globus pallidus eases delusions in schizophrenia
JosephJacks_ · x · 2026-10-21
A randomized, sham-controlled crossover pilot study in npj Acoustics shows transcranial ultrasound stimulation (TUS) targeting the right globus pallidus interna (GPi) is safe, tolerable, and shows preliminary efficacy in relieving delusions in schizophrenia. GPi dysfunction is linked to psychosis severity; TUS allows noninvasive targeting of deep brain structures. Reposting scholar Stuart Hameroff speculates the mechanism is microtubule resonance, noting similar low-intensity parameters to his team's prior work. Mechanism remains unproven; results are from a small pilot.
