Google & MIT study: scientists using AI save nearly 7 hours a week
AnneliesGamble · x · 2026-10-21
Google, Google DeepMind, and MIT FutureTech released "AI in Science: Early Insights", drawing on 15 million Gemini interactions, an inventory of 2,600+ specialized AI models, and a survey of 600+ scientists, mapped onto a new taxonomy of scientific tasks.
Four key findings:
- Broad adoption: scientists use AI more than most other occupations; nearly half of surveyed scientists use some form of AI daily, and specialized models have wide disciplinary coverage and high citations.
- Complements, not substitutes: LLMs (proxied by Gemini usage) handle general analysis, coding, and manuscript prep, while specialized models handle domain-specific prediction, data generation, and classification.
- Productivity: scientists report saving nearly 7 hours per week, mostly reinvested into more research.
- Changing the process: AI is already reshaping the scientific workflow.
Mihai Codreanu discussed the paper in an interview about how AI can turn scientific hypotheses into discoveries.
