Anthropic taps law firms to teach AI agents how to negotiate deals
jkubicki · x · 2026-10-21
Per the Financial Times, Anthropic is consulting law firms on how lawyers push hard for clients while still landing fair outcomes, aiming to embed those skills into its models and negotiating agents.
The author offers three takes:
- Agents will excel at the functional side of negotiation but lack the judgment to read clients — knowing when to walk away, protect the relationship, or tell a client their goal is wrong.
- The real threat is to lawyers who never did the EQ work, not top practitioners; consumer-to-merchant deals will likely come before complex transactions.
- Negotiating agents will create more work for lawyers short term: every deal an agent closes raises the question of whether it had authority to agree, requiring drafted guardrails — and litigation when they fail.
