Google open-sources TorchTPU, joining Amazon in loosening Nvidia's grip on PyTorch developers
gaganghotra_ · x · 2026-10-21
Google announced that TorchTPU, its long-awaited PyTorch version for Tensor Processing Units, is now open source, letting AI apps run on Google TPUs — following Amazon's similar move against Nvidia's stronghold. PyTorch is used by roughly 85% of AI apps and was originally built at Meta in 2016 with Nvidia GPU-specific features, later handed to the Linux Foundation in 2022. TorchTPU lowers the barrier to migrating off CUDA, as cloud vendors compete for the AI compute entry point.
