KHIPU, the Latin American AI conference community, responded to a thread with Jeff Dean stressing that multilingual and low-resource NLP built by local researchers has been its core since day one: the open Spanish BERT model BETO trained at Universidad de Chile using Cloud TPUs announced at KHIPU 2019, longtime member OmarUFlorez helping lead LatamGPT, and a 2027 São Paulo speaker lineup including Masakhane co-founder Vukosi, Marzieh Fadaee and Sarah Hooker — continuing work across Latin American and Indigenous languages.
